Will High Pitched Sound Deterrent Machines or Strobe Lights Keep Rats Away?

No matter what the problem is, you can be sure that someone has created what they believe is a high-tech solution to resolve. Just about everything from turning on your dishwasher using your phone app to having an automated vacuum cleaner turn itself on and clean your floors while you’re at work has been created to make our lives a lot simpler.

Machines to Keep Rats Away
This has been the case with new tech innovations designed to try to keep rats away from your home. To be honest, the science behind this makes some sense. There are sounds that are incredibly irritating to rats. When these sounds emanate from the machine, it should cause the rat to become so irritated by them that they refuse to come around your home.

The same is true of light. Rats are nocturnal creatures, looking to get around during the darkest hours of the night so that they are less likely to be attacked by a potential predator. Flashing a light on a continuous basis at a rat should startle it enough, that it scurries away to avoid detection.

Do They Work
While the science behind them seems fairly sound, the problem is that these machines simply don’t live up to the hype. Starting with the high-pitched machine, it is easy to see where some problem areas arise. These machines generate a noise using sound waves. The sound waves lose their potency over distance, meaning that the further the rat is away from the machine, the less of an impact it is going to have.

If you have a problem with rats coming around your home from several different directions, it would mean you would need several of these machines to be able to deter the animals away. That can be quite costly, especially considering that you may not even be sure that it will work.

You also have to consider that if this machine does effectively keep rats away, it could also scare off your cat or dog. Just as irritating as it is to the rodent, it could have an irritating impact on your canine or feline. This could be a solution that keeps away rats but also ensures you never see your dog or cat again.

As for the strobe light, the truth is that this will only have a limited impact as well. While the rat may be startled by it at first, it is soon going to realize that the strobe light is not much different than a severe lightning storm occurring. It may keep out of the light for a time, but because there is not a bright light continuously on it, it knows it still has some cover.

The high-tech ideas sound like good ones, but they simply don’t work as advertised. If you are having a serious problem with rats, you will need to look into an alternative. There are good options out there so don’t be discouraged.
